TIME IS A SERPENT IN THE RIVER
A Weird Miami River Cruise With Lee Pivnik
Join us for a wet and wild tour up the Miami River and through time itself, as Lee Pivnik guides us through the ancient waterway’s past, present and possible futures. The bank of the Miami River has supported human settlements for over ten millennia; It is a stage on which countless stories have been set. Much has been lost—and even more forgotten—so our task together will be to meander through the river’s murky memories.
We’ll travel by boat up the river as we dredge up historical accounts from the various communities that have shaped Downtown Miami. We’ll collectively explore waterfront sites including Lummus Park, Jose Marti Park, and the deep archaeological histories at the mouth of the river. Lee will share how today’s river reflects a century of geoengineering, and we’ll map how it has been reshaped in the name of industrial progress. We’ll use the river as a case study in Everglades water management and ask: what could this river become if our priorities were rooted in environmental care?
Lee Pivnik is a Miami-based artist, who draws inspiration from other species to imagine a future based on mutualistic relationships instead of extractive economies. His sculptures, photographs, and installations create a visual language for ecological entanglement, referencing fungal networks, epiphytic plants, and emergent animal architectures that inhabit South Florida. His current projects center ideas of Florida Futurism, through cli-fi storytelling, and bioremediating sculptures designed to restore polluted freshwater ecosystems. Pivnik founded and co-directs the Institute of Queer Ecology (IQECO), a collaborative organism that has worked with over 150 different artists to produce artworks and interdisciplinary programming.
