Introduction

Back in October 2023 the Culture Shock Miami Crew had the pleasure of paying a visit to The Hive, a co-working space for teens. Join us for a look around their prototype space!

The Space

Upon walking into the space you are greeted with an open view of the entire layout. The first stop is the Check-in counter where you are greeted by one of The Hive’s staff members and are able to sign-in before having access to the rest of the creative outlet areas present in The Hive.

Next up, the Design Center. A fashion textile area where students have access to a variety of machinery such as sewing machines, a heat press machine, fabric markers and paints, yarn, and donated T-shirts for students to customize.

Here are the multiple visual arts areas where students can utilize paints, oil pastels, resin, polymer clay, and a 3D printer for their more physical creations. There is also a laptop, and an iPad equipped with an Apple Pencil and Procreate along with two cameras, a DSLR for photos, along with a photo booth with a different weekly setup, and a Sony Vlogging Camera for videos. These are perfect for students more inclined towards graphic design, digital art, and videography/photography.

For the more musically inclined students, there are community instruments such as a keyboard, guitar, and drum kit at their disposal to practice with, as well as regular workshops led by a Hive staff member to help students  become familiar with their chosen instrument. Along another wall is Honeycomb Studios, a recording area decked out with a Mac computer equipped with Garageband and a recording booth with a mic that can be easily deconstructed. The studios can be used for a variety of purposes such as recording music, podcasts, and narration.

Some other areas available to Hive members include a Book Box from Alliance 4 LGBTQ Youth and a bookcase where members can showcase and store their in-progress projects that they can easily access the next time they come back.

Updates

The Hive team had their grand opening in July of 2023 at their prototype space in North Miami. As of December 2023,  The Hive adopted a more decentralized programming model in collaboration with other organizations to serve more teens on a broader scale.
