Chain ReACTion Drama Showcase Presented by African Heritage Youth Theatre

The African Heritage Youth Theatre (AHYT) presents a drama showcase titled, “Chain ReACTion.” The youth theatre production is on Friday, May 11, 2018 at the Wendell A. Narcisse Performing Arts Theater at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center (AHCAC), 6161 NW 22nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33142. The performance begins 7:00 p.m. and will end at 8:30 p.m.

Chain ReACTion is a variety show with contemporary monologues and scenes that cover the ongoing social issues of this generation such as racism, colorism, veganism, poverty, and patriarchy. Members are AHYT are using the stage as a platform to make sure their voices are heard.

This will be the company’s second production under the direction of Mrs. Jazmin Jones-Oliver, African Heritage Cultural Arts Center alumni and current Theater Director. When creating the show, Mrs. Oliver states the show was created based on conversations she’s had with the members. “Our youth are going through a lot and acting is a great way to work through some of their issues.”

The African Heritage Youth Theatre is the in-house youth acting apprenticeship program at the AHCAC for ages, 10-17.  Former AHYT member Fergie L. Philippe, is currently a cast member of the second national tour of the hit musical Hamilton. Students in AHYT perform two main-stage productions, attend cultural excursions and performances, and participate in workshops and community service. AHYT strives to develop members’ acting repertoire and enhance both technical and theatrical skills magnet schools and professional agencies desire. Private lessons are provided during the week and ensemble training takes place every weekend. Young thespians can be invited to join AHYT or audition. General admission for Chain ReACTion is $10.

Washington and Fergie L. Philippe, US Tour cast members of Hamilton the musical; Bianca Brewton, professional dancer (Beyoncé and Bruno Mars); Shareef Clayton, Grammy-nominated jazz trumpeter (Arturo Sandoval and Stevie Wonder); and tap dancer Marshall Davis, Jr., associate choreographer of the Tony-nominated play, Shuffle Along.
