MARMORE COMPANHIA DO CHAPITÔ, Lisbon, PORTUGAL EDIPO (Oedipus) a collective creation based on Sophocles’ classic Oedipus, directed by José Carlos García

Everyone knows the myth of Oedipus, son of Laius and Jocasta, king and queen of Thebes, who was abandoned at birth on Mt. Cithaeron in response to the Oracle at Delphi’s prediction that he would kill his father and marry his mother. The child was rescued by shepherds, who took him to the court of Polybus, king of Corinth. Because he had doubts about his origin, the grown-up Oedipus consulted the Oracle, who advised him to leave his country. Oedipus sets out, seeking to escape his inexorable fate, by which he will commit parricide and incest, duel with monsters, endure a plague and experience other such contretemps. On his way out of the country, he crosses paths with Laius, whom he does not know. They argue and Oedipus kills the man. Once in Thebes, he easily solves the riddles posed by the Sphinx. The grateful Thebans give him the widow Jocasta (his mother) in marriage. When the awful truth comes to light, Jocasta hangs herself and Oedipus puts out his eyes. He ends his days in Colonnus, where his daughter Antigone has taken him.

MARMORE - COMPANHIA DO CHAPITÔ

Lisboa, PORTUGAL
presents/ presenta EDIPO (...)
directed by/ dirigida por José Carlos GarcíaSOBRE LA OBRA
